A-Day Notebook: Offense, defense, recruits

Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville has been looking for several of his receivers to step up and provide big plays for the offense this spring.

On Saturday, he saw two as junior Rod Smith and sophomore Montez Billings combined to catch seven passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

A returning starter, Smith has been AU's most consistent big-play threat this spring. But Billings has used the spring to take several steps forward, pushing past senior Prechae Rodriguez onto the first team this week and making a statement at A-Day.

"Montez had his best day," said Tuberville. "He's a big receiver who can get open in the middle of the field.
