Spring Ball Preview: Tight Ends

Next up in our Spring Ball Preview series we look at the tight end position.

Quarterback John David Booty will have plenty of experienced tight ends to chose from to help protect him and act as a safety valve in the passing game. Senior Fred Davis leads the way at the position and sophomore Anthony McCoy looks to have unlimited upside.

Davis is certainly the go-to tight end in the passing game and will look to repeat a breakout 2006 season featuring 38 grabs for 352 yards and three touchdowns. "Big Fred" got off to a quick start last year catching a bullet pass for a touchdown from Booty against Arkansas in the opener. While Davis' performance against the Razorbacks pointed to a huge year, his numbers waned as the year progressed with Booty favoring his talent corps of receivers on the outside.

With a new offensive coordinator (Steve Sarkisian) and new passing game coordinator John Morton, it remains to be seen if the 2007 Trojan offense will utilize the tight ends more in the passing game. The loss of Booty's key targets (Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith) will certainly create an opportunity for Davis and McCoy to step in and make meaningful contributions. We should get some answers this spring as the coaches gameplan for throwing to the tight ends begins to unfold.
