Irish offer top Texas lineman
Ben Habern's talent isn't the question. What's up for debate is where the 6-foot-3, 260-pound athlete from Argyle, Texas projects as a college prospect.
Oklahoma and Texas A&M see the star of Liberty Christian as a future center. Notre Dame and Miami forecast a future at defensive end for Habern. In fact, the Irish are so sure Habern can help put pressure on quarterbacks that Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis pulled Habern aside during junior day to offer a scholarship.
"I wasn't expecting that at all," Habern said. "It really surprised me. They're definitely at the top of the list with maybe one or two other schools. They have a lot of tradition and they compete for the national championship every year."
