Notebook: 'D' delivers on first day in pads

The first day in pads Thursday was a physical one for the Auburn football team and whether it was a 1-on-1 or 11-on-11 team drill, there was a clear winner - the defense.

Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp challenged his defense to step up their intensity on Thursday and they responded.

"There was a lot of emotion," said AU junior linebacker Steve Gandy. "We flew around the ball pretty good. Overall, I thought the defense had a pretty good practice for the first day."

Not surprisingly, Auburn offensive coordinator Al Borges was not pleased with the play on his side of the ball.

"They had more intensity," said Borges of the defense. "You have to match or exceed their intensity. If you don't, you're going to get embarrassed.

"We have to get tougher offensively. We're too soft right now. We have to be more aggressive."
