Anthony Davis: What he means to Rutgers football
Rutgers football has been able to attract top players over the last couple of years, which is obviously why the Scarlet Knights have gone to two consecutive bowls. But landing a consensus New Jersey #1 recruit seems to have been the program's unicorn. That changed this afternoon in San Antonio, when the #1 ranked player in New Jersey, OL Anthony Davis of Piscataway (NJ), decided that Rutgers was the right place for him. So what does this actually mean for the Scarlet Knights?
1. Let's begin with the competition that Rutgers beat out for Davis. We all know that he ended up choosing RU over #1 Ohio State at the end, but let's not forget that Davis, the #3 ranked offensive guard in the country, also held offers from other top programs like USC, Miami, Notre Dame, Tennessee, West Virginia, Florida State, LSU, Georgia, and Texas. Rutgers beat out top competition for players like Manny Abreu, Kordell Young, Alex Silvestro, and Kenny Britt - but none quite like this.
2. Receiving Davis' commitment would have been great for Rutgers at any time, location, and situation, but nobody could have planned the reality of it any better. To have Davis make his decision live on NBC is a recruiting fiesta. Some people on the message boards were disappointed that the news leaked out previous to his public announcement, but think about the number of recruits, kids, and college football fans who were still stunned by the announcement.
