Freeny commits to Rutgers
Chalk another one up to Rutgers assistant Darren Rizzi. In much the same way that Joe Susan and his staff have been searching through every nook and cranny of the northeast looking for talent, Rizzi and colleague Chris Demarest have been combing through Florida. While some of their hauls have included "big name" players like Joseph Nicolas, the duo have also unearthed a few "hidden gems".
Rizzi's latest catch - Coconut Creek LB/DE Jonathan Freeney - is a player who stayed beneath the nation's radar throughout the recruiting process. The 6-foot-3, 220 athlete was identified by Rizzi during one of his trips through Broward County, and was later visited by Rutgers head Coach Greg Schiano. Those visits occurred before the team's clinic at Dillard High school - the usual venue for identifying talent. Once the clinic arrived, though, Freeney says that it wasn't long before he received his offer.
