MSU gaining ground in the chase for Johnson

Detroit - Leave it to perhaps the best player in the state to provide the biggest news of the night. Muskegon cornerback Ronald Johnson said at the Dream Team Banquet on Wednesday that he has added a fifth school to his list of official visits - Michigan State.

"Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, USC and Michigan State," Johnson said, when asked what schools he is visiting. "I've already visited Michigan. I'll visit Michigan State the first week of January."

Johnson was ranked the No. 2 defensive back in the nation by Rivals.com in September. Rivals.com has since changed his listing to the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation.

Rivals.com lists him as the No. 5 player in the country overall.

New Michigan State defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett has been busy gaining a rapport with Johnson. MSU's previous staff worked hard to maintain a dialogue with Johnson, and the new staff has picked it up nicely.

Johnson was asked what has impressed him thus far about new head coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartan staff.

"The coaches' determination and how they want everything done," Johnson said. "You can't go wrong with how bad they want to win and how they're going about it.

"I think highly of them because I know they are coming in with a good program plan and the team is going to be good, probably next season, you never know," Johnson said. "But I think they are going to make a good program."

At defensive back, opponents often tried to avoid Johnson. Thus he didn't rack up big numbers in tackles or interceptions. But on offense, he seemed to turned in big plays almost every time he touched the ball.

He rushed for 347 yards on 30 carries, with four TDs. As a receiver, he had 26 catches for 663 yards and seven TDs.
