Ryan Orton, EP move on to section finals

Eden Prairie offensive lineman Ryan Orton, 6-foot-4 280 pounds, committed to the Gophers last June and he, along with Farmington's Trey Davis, Osseo's Chris Bunders and Maple Grove's Ryan Wynn, headline the Minnesota 2007 offensive linemen recruits. Last Friday night Orton and his linemates blocked for an Eden Prairie running attack that gained 260 yards and beat Minnetonka 31-7 in the section semi-finals.

Orton played most of the game at right tackle but he also moved to both guard positions. In pass protection Ryan moved his feet very well, stood his man up using his strong hands and he pushed opponents far outside maintaining the pocket. In pass protection, Ryan was flawless giving the opposing defensive end Andrew Hanske nothing the entire game.

Run blocking, Orton gets in a powerful stance where he gets off the ball with good quickness and hits his assignment with two very strong hands. Countless times Orton pushed Hanske five yards off the ball or one of the linebackers several yards out of the play. Ryan was getting low, locking his man and drives them where ever he wanted when run blocking. Orton has nice form learned from solid teachers at EP but another reason for his ability to dominate the opposing defenders is his strong lower body. He has very thick legs and Orton's listed squat of 550 has surely improved over the past half year. Ryan's one real noticeable mistake was an offsides penalty that made a 3rd and five and a 3rd and ten.
