Sleeper DL getting a few looks
Woodruff (S.C.) defensive lineman/tight end Devlin Johnson is emerging as a sleeper to watch in the Palmetto State for the Class of 2007.
The 6-foot-3, 265-pounder is drawing interest from a trio of college programs.
"I'm hearing from South Carolina, North Carolina and Tulsa," Johnson said.
It isn't often that the Golden Hurricane comes to South Carolina to recruit a prospect, but there is a connection. Tulsa cornerbacks coach Derek Jones is a Woodruff High alum.
Johnson's coach, Freddie Brown, says that his senior star is a definite Division I-A prospect.
"He's strong, athletic, long and well-built," Brown said. "He's very athletic, has great feet, good balance and is physical."
Brown sees Johnson as a strongside defensive end at the college level.
"He's a five technique right now," he said. "He's been inside his whole career."
Woodruff is the same high school that produced former Notre Dame quarterback Tony Rice. Rice led the Fighting Irish to the 1988 National Championship.
