Defense Shines In Scrimmage

The good news for Cal is that the defense is performing at a very high level after dominating the first scrimmage of 2006 Fall Camp on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The bad news is that the Bears may have lost star corner Tim Mixon for a while. The senior from Compton had just finished a fine punt return when he crumpled to the ground and grabbed his right leg.

"He planted and his knee gave out," said Jeff Tedford. "He's having an MRI tonight. At first glimpse it doesn't look good, but our fingers are crossed."

Redshirt freshman Syd'Quan Thompson is expected to fill in for Mixon if the injury is deemed serious.

"Syd's had a good camp," said Tedford. "He is ready if we need him."

The injury to Mixon was the only spoiler to a day when the defense looked fast and aggressive, spending much of its time in the offense's backfield.
