Saunders wants to hear from Irish

Wesley Saunders walked the campus with a different perspective this time.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound athlete from Durham, N.C., made another visit to South Bend this summer, but this time he wasn't walking the campus of his favorite college football team as a fan. Saunders was checking out the Golden Dome and Notre Dame Stadium wondering if the University was one he'd attend next year.

If the Irish coaching staff does offer a scholarship to the defensive end/tight end from Riverside High School, there's a good chance Saunders' next visit to South Bend would be as a Notre Dame verbal commitment. Saunders said he hasn't heard much from the Irish staff, but Notre Dame probably doesn't need to make a hard sell on this North Carolina athlete who was born in Indiana and said he still roots for the program.

"I loved it," Saunders said about the Notre Dame visit that didn't include contact with the Irish coaching staff. "It seemed like the perfect fit for me."

Saunders claims nine scholarship offers and put Wake Forest, Penn State, North Carolina and Clemson atop his list. However, he said Notre Dame would jump to the front if the Irish offered, so much so that Saunders said he might commit on the spot.
