Phillips ready to focus on football, get stronger
One of the advantages of being patient in football recruiting is getting the opportunity to discover talents. NC State has been effective in the past using this tactic, with recent first-round draft picks Manny Lawson and John McCargo being two examples.
In 2006, NC State offered Rashad Phillips of Landstown High in Virginia Beach, Va., in December, less than two months before signing day. After just one year of football, Phillips picked the Pack over offers from Syracuse, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati among others.
Schools were clamoring for Phillips after he had 36 receptions for 336 yards and four touchdowns as a tight end and recorded 23 sacks on defense. He also blocked five punts. Before last year however, Phillips was a basketball player.
