Byers is back
Ft. Collins, Colo., redshirt sophomore Jeff Byers came to USC as the No. 1 ranked high school offensive lineman in the country.
As expected, Byers competed for a starting job as a true freshman and earned significant playing time at the end of his first season as a Trojan. Last fall, Byers' season ended before it started, after suffering a hip injury that required surgery.
At 6-foot-3, 287-pounds, Byers has been a staple of versatility for USC. Playing both center and guard the last two years, his ability to stay healthy has overshadowed his ability to make blocks. This spring Trojan fans got a scare when Byers went down hard just days before The Huddle.
While trying to tackle Kaluka Maiava on an interception return, many Trojan fans feared Byers had re-injured his hip when he limped back to the sidelines after the play. Fortunately, the injury was neither re-occurring nor serious.
