DotComp: The Look of a Contender

IOWA CITY - I don't think I've seen so many bright, confident smiles around a Spartan post-game locker room since, well, the last time the Spartans were rumbling around here at Kinnick Stadium.

That was back in 2011, when a victory over Iowa cemented Michigan State's inside track to a division championship, and exorcised two decades of demons for the Spartans at this old field.

This time, after an encouraging 26-13 beating of Iowa, the Spartan smiles were not so much about what had been accomplished, but what can be accomplished.

These weren't the exhausted, grateful smiles of a champion. Not after a checkpoint game like this. These were the expectant grins of talented guys discovering and cultivating the seeds of a champion that had been planted by Cousins, Hoyer, Ringer, Le'veon, Trenton, Jerel, Keshawn and Greg Jones a few years before. I'm not guaranteeing that this group will get to that level. But a performance like this creates a vision of what the rest of the season may look like.
