Dawgs lose hoops assistant

Georgia assistant basketball coach Kwanza Johnson has resigned to take a position with Tubby Smith at Texas Tech, incoming freshman Juwan Parker confirmed to UGASports Sunday.

"They (Georgia coaches) called me before they announced to let me know," Parker said via text.

With Johnson gone, Georgia is expected to name former Bulldog Jonas Hayes as his replacement.

Hayes was on the road recruiting Sunday and could not immediately be reached for comment. Last year, he served as Georgia's Operation Coordinator.

Johnson, meanwhile, is returning to familiar ground.

A native of Oklahoma City, Johnson played collegiately first at Rose State College before finishing at Tulsa in 1995. Both of his Hurricane teams, coached by former Georgia coach Tubby Smith, won the Missouri Valley Conference title and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. In his final season for the Hurricane, Johnson was elected team captain and was also named to the MVC All-Defensive team.Johnson began his collegiate playing career at Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla., where he was the junior college Region II Player of the Year and was named to the national junior college all-tournament team in 1993.
