Notebook: Midland practice

MIDLAND, Texas -- What happened in the Permian Basin could revolutionize how other schools approach spring football in future seasons.

Texas Tech learned Saturday, if you take it to them, they will come. By the thousands.

It seemed like a good idea on paper to take a Red Raider football program with rising stock to the center of the new Texas oil boom, but at the end of the day the Red Raiders had to rely on Midland, Texas, and Odessa, Texas, residents to make a 240-mile round trip economically feasible.

As Midland-Odessa residents know best, and perhaps smile about, it's not cheap to fuel up busses and take a spring practice on the road.

Red Raider fans in the Permian Basin answered the call and showed up 7,136 strong to provide about as good a spring practice environment as any BCS team could hope for in what was virtually a standard football scrimmage.
