Insider Report: Final preseason scrimmage wrap

Two starting jobs still up for grabs

With just one final week of practice before the 2012 college football season finally gets underway, Florida State has just two starting positions yet to be filled out.

Junior college transfers Daniel Glauser and Menelik Watson continue to battle for the starting right tackle job, while sophomore Nick Waisome is trying to hold off true freshman Ronald Darby at field corner.

Waisome and Darby are battling for the starting job vacated by Greg Reid's dismissal before the season. Waisome saw action in 11 games last season and recorded just one tackle.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Groveland native has lined up as the starter in every pre-practice walk through thus far in fall camp, but Darby has been praised by coaches and teammates for his performance.

"He's doing really well," head coach Jimbo Fisher said of Darby. "He's going to play and he'll play a lot this year."

Fisher also said that he has been pleased with how Waisome has been performing in camp.

"Nick [Waisome] is doing a really nice job, too," he said.

Starting safety Lamrcus Joyner said you can see flashes of Darby's potential, but that Waisome still has a leg up since he's been in the system for a year already.

"You can tell that Waisome has been in college and in the system for a year," Joyner said. "Darby, he's the other young guy that's full of potential and a lot of talent, he's just got to get fundamentally and technique sound and that's where Nick Waisome is a little ahead of him right now."

Fisher said he has also been pleased with how both Glauser and Watson have performed in their position battle and they'll continue to rotate with the starting offense for the next few days.

Quarterback [db]EJ Manuel said he feels comfortable with both guys in the huddle.

"I think they're all doing a solid job," Manuel said. "I like Menelik out there. He's doing a great job and then he had a little injury to his shoulder but he was back out there practicing (Thursday), and Glauser is doing a great job."
