California safety high on Spartans
One of the players the Spartans are taking a serious look at for a remaining scholarship spot for the class of 2013 is safety Brandon Arnold of Crespi High School in Encino, California. SpartanMag.com caught up with the 6-foot-0, 185-poound prospect and got the details about his recruitment.
Arnold has seen his recruiting stock rise steadily this spring and he now has a solid list of scholarship offers. Rivals.com rates Arnold a 3-star recruits and the #47 safety in the nation. He is also ranked the 64th best prospect in talent rich California. We asked Arnold about his offers and his current favorites.
"I have 11 scholarships right now," Arnold said. "Michigan State and Cal are standing out right now. I have to speak with Coach Barnett about setting up a visit out there."
The Spartans are tight on scholarships for the class of 2013, but based on the offers they have out it looks as if they want to add one more strong safety type of recruit to the class. Arnold along with Delton Williams and Marcus Ball would seem to be the primary candidates to fill that spot. We asked Arnold what it is about Michigan State and the Big Ten Conference that he likes.
"I like the history they have of being a good football program," he said. "I like the fact that they play smash-mouth style, have crazy fans, good academics and are in a good cold area."
The cold area preference is due to the fact that Arnold understands that many of the top professional football teams thrive in colder climates be it New York, New England, Green Bay, Chicago or Pittsburgh. The opportunity to experience a traditional Midwestern fall and winter is something Arnold likes.
The fact that Arnold plays safety and is being recruited by Spartan Secondary Coach Harlon Barnett speaks to the type of player he is. We asked Arnold what type of feedback he has received from the Spartan staff and if he has a time-table for making his college choice.
"They like my size and how physical I am," Arnold said. "They say I am a smart player and that I make plays. They also like the fact that I am not stiff. I am thinking I might make my decision after my 3rd or 4th game. It all depends on seeing the schools I like and making sure it is the right fit."
Looking at Crespi High schedule, Arnold does not have a game the weekend of September 28th. That is the same weekend that Michigan State will host the Ohio State Buckeyes. That would seem to be the perfect weekend for Arnold to take an official visit to East Lansing. Not only will he be able to spend the entire weekend on campus, but he should get a great idea about the typical fall atmosphere at Michigan State.
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow Arnold's recruitment. As we have indicated it may come down to a situation of which prospect gets on campus first and decides to jump at the opportunity to be part of the Spartan family.
