The Five Anchors

The Vanderbilt Commodores improved to 2-0 on the season with an exciting 24-21 win over the Connecticut Huskies last Saturday. The Commodores scored two touchdowns on offense, but it was the Vanderbilt defense that truly led the way, limiting the Huskies to just 193 total yards of offense and 86 net rushing yards. It marked the lowest yardage the Huskies offense has generated in over 68 games.

It also marked the second win for new Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin, making him the first Commodore head coach to start off his tenure in Nashville with a 2-0 record since Fred Pancoast in 1975.

Following every Commodore victory, VandySports.com highlights its top five contributors in the latest Vanderbilt win with a feature called The Five Anchors.

The Five Anchors for the victory over Connecticut are:

TIM FUGGER

Position: Defensive End
Game Stats: Registered four tackles with two tackles for loss, two sacks and a quarterback hurry.

Why he gets an Anchor: Fugger played a major part in shutting down the Huskies offense for most of the night. The senior registered back-to-back sacks during a drive that turned the momentum back to the Commodores in the second half. The San Diego native also registered nearly a handful of tackles in run support, providing some resistance to a Huskies bigger offensive line and corral U-Conn's Lyle McCombs from the second quarter on. When Fugger wasn't making tackles, he was bringing pressure to the Huskie quarterbacks and rushing throws, or he was cutting off the edge for McCombs and allowing the Commodore linebackers to make the tackle.

CASEY HAYWARD

Position: Cornerback
Game Stats: Registered four tackles with one tackle for loss and an interception that he returned for 50 yards and a touchdown.
