Spring practice 2011 notebook practice 4
In Sonny Dykes' post-practice comments to the media, he explained that right now Louisiana Tech is rotating the reps during the team drills between 2 quarterbacks each day. Yesterday was Taylor Burch and Tarik Hakmi's day.
The Quaterback Battle
Burch had what was his best day on campus at Tech. He was delivering balls with accuracy down field and in the flats. He really seems to be getting a better grasp of the offense. As many know, Burch is currently playing baseball as well at Tech. He, Wade Simoneaux and Sonny Dykes all sat down prior to spring practice to discuss what would be done when dates conflicted between baseball and football this spring. What was decided, as he said here, that the three decided Burch would not travel with the baseball team to Baylor this past weekend and instead stay with football for the first 4 days. Yesterday was day 4 with spring practice. Stay with BleedTechBlue.com as we find out the latest on this situation.
Hakmi struggled a bit yesterday with his accuracy. He was throwing at the feet of his receivers much of the afternoon. He still exhibits a big arm as he hooked up with Andrew Guillot on about a 35 yard touchdown pass.
Tomorrow will most likely be Colby Cameron and Zach Griffith's day.
The Hog Mollies
Both the offensive and defensive lines looked good yesterday. Justin Ellis seems to have continued where he left off at the end of the season last year and the addition of Jon'al White is really going to help Louisiana Tech on the defensive line. Matt Broha and I.K. Enempkali are also continuing where they left off.
Along the offensive line, many of the junior college players need to lose some weight but the veterans ahead of them are playing very well right now. Yesterday even saw the addition of Vince Cano in the "modified pistol" Tech showed last year as a fullback. Cano's athleticism could prove very valuable in that position as he has great lateral movement.
Connor Nichols had a fantastic interception from his safety position as he was running to the sidelines to defend a pass. He jumped in front of the ball and came down with the interception.
The Tech corners really seem to be stepping up. In man coverage, Dave Clark gave newcomer Myles White all he could handle.
Tech seems to be loaded at receiver going into next year. When you think Tim Molton and Ahmad Paige are sitting out this spring and there is still this amount of talent on the field is a pleasant sign for Tech fans. Scott Cathcart has shaken off his first day jitters and is showing why Tech coaches like his big stature coming out of his junior college in California.
It is unfortunate for Tech fans that D.J. Banks has to sit out a year because he is really showing the coaches everything he has in every practice. Banks can get separation almost at will from anyone.
With the move of Eric Harper to outside receiver, he seems to be making the transition pretty well. He has several drops yesterday afternoon but was in position to make the catch most of the time.
