Mississippi linebacker keeping an open mind
Richie Brown was back on the road this weekend, checking out Ole Miss yet again.
The Rebels are one of several schools in the early mix for the talented linebacker from Long Beach, Miss.
"I've seen the campus and all," Brown said Friday night as he and his father made the trip from Mississippi's Gulf coast to Oxford. "I want to see what kind of academic programs they have, what attitudes they have toward football and academics and football together. I want to see what goals they have and what goals they have for me as a linebacker."
Brown, a 6-foot-2 ½, 222-pounder, was a standout at Ole Miss' elite camp last summer. The Rebels, Brown said, had been trying to get him to come to a junior day, thus Saturday's on-campus visit. Ole Miss hasn't offered yet, which is OK with Brown, as he's in no hurry to make a decision.
Besides Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn, Texas A&M, TCU, UCLA and Stanford have been expressing serious interest.
Recruiting is kind of getting up and going right now," said Brown, who will attend Mississippi State's junior day next weekend. "There are a lot of junior days and coaches are coming down to see me. It's kind of what I expected though some things are kind of new here and there."
Brown recorded 162 tackles as a sophomore and followed that performance with a 151-tackle effort in 2010. Brown added three sacks and two fumble returns for touchdowns to earn second-team all-state honors as a linebacker. He added 50 rushes for 333 yards and nine receptions for 214 yards on offense, scoring eight touchdowns on that side of the ball.
"I think I'm doing pretty well working out," Brown said. "I'm getting my weight up and I'm working on keeping my speed up."
Brown, who is considering pursuing a degree in engineering or several science-related fields, said he plans to have a busy summer on the camp circuit. Brown said he plans to attend camp at LSU as well as some camp stops throughout Mississippi.
I've seen all of the schools around here, but I haven't seen the ones further out of state," Brown said. "I don't have any favorites at all. I'm very open-minded. It's pretty early for me. I don't have any favorites. I don't have a top five. I don't have anything."
