Four-star CB entertains MSU, Ole Miss coaches
Greenwood, (Amanda Elzy) Miss., defensive back Jermaine Whitehead took an unofficial visit to Ole Miss for the Egg Bowl on November 27 as he watched the team to which he's committed - Mississippi State, and a team who wants to flip that commitment - Ole Miss.
The 6-foot, 183-pound cornerback prospect said his trip to Ole Miss was "pretty good, I had a lot of fun."
"(Ole Miss) is pretty cool," Whitehead said of his relationship with Rebel coaches, players and commitments. "I still really like those guys. One thing that Coach Nutt did remind me of is the last time he didn't make a bowl game, the next season he got the the SEC Championship. That's really something I can look at."
The players Whitehead talked to include Marcus Temple, Jeremy McGee, Jerrell Powe, Kentrell Lockett and a "couple other guys."
Whitehead's Ole Miss recruiter is Rebel running backs coach Derrick Nix.
Whitehead also spoke with Rebel commitments Donte Moncrief, Collins Moore, Justin Bell and Aaron Morris. He also spoke with the currently uncommitted Tobias Singleton and said he's still a subject of heavy recruitment by Ole Miss commitments and coaches.
Whitehead's official visit-itinerary plans include Mississippi State on "January 15 and 16, I think." He plans to visit Ole Miss and potentially Auburn, but the dates for such visits have not yet been set, although he noted the visit to Ole MIss is not "set up yet, but probably the next week after (the official to) Mississippi State."
As Whitehead's flirtations with Ole Miss, Auburn and potentially other schools continues until February, the four-star cornerback said "If I had to go today, I'd be going with Mississippi State. I still like everything that's going on. They're cool."
Both head coaches at Mississippi State and Ole Miss have been unofficially linked to other coaching vacancies and Whitehead noted that staff changes will certainly affect his commitment.
"I'd definitely change schools," Whitehead said in reply to if his commitment is an allegiance to Mississippi State or to Dan Mullen and Bulldog defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.
"I want a program that has a track record," Whitehead said of his future university. "One that can produce with (a coach) that I really know."
