Spartans prepare for toughest game of season

EAST LANSING - At 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play, Michigan State is the surprise of college football in 2010. Mark Dantonio's crew has their eyes on a Big Ten championship and BCS Bowl berth.

The Spartans are chasing their first undefeated season since 1966 when luminaries Bubba Smith, George Webster, and Gene Washington guided Michigan State to the school's last national championship.

With four games remaining in conference, Michigan State has a manageable schedule with what appears to be winnable games against Minnesota, Purdue, and Penn State. Those games arrive only after Michigan State takes on a formidable Iowa opponent at Kinnick Stadium Saturday.

Michigan State has won road games at Michigan and at Northwestern. But the Spartans have yet to play in Iowa City in one of college football's toughest venues.

"When you look at playing in Chicago, when you look at playing at Michigan, when you look at playing Florida Atlantic, that is a different away game as opposed to Iowa," Dantonio said. "When you look at playing at Kinnick Stadium, the majority, probably 95 percent of the people will be dressed in black and gold or whatever."
