Week-7: Grading The Gators
The result Saturday night for the Florida Gators -- a shocking 10-7 loss to Mississippi State at Florida Field -- wasn't pretty. But how did each unit fare when evaluated on its own? Find out in this week's Grading the Gators.
All things considered, this group wasn't terrible. Quarterback John Brantley completed 24 of 39 passes for 210 yards and one interception, but the pick wasn't his fault and he was victimized by several drops. The one question, though, is this: Why didn't he throw deep at all? What that his doing, or was he under orders not to? Brantley ran the two-minute offense well at game's end, probably because the Gators' regular offense also is nothing but dink and dump passes anyway. The running game stunk in the first half, but picked things up in the second behind the play of backup quarterback Trey Burton and Omarius Hines, who at times slid over to running back from receiver because of injuries. Without Burton, the Gators might not have scored. Tailback Jeff Demps, who had been slowed recently by a foot sprain, looked fine and showed a nice burst with the ball. But he attempted only five carries.
