Defense, defense, defense and interceptions were the words of the evening
Tarik Hakmi made huge strides today as a quarterback. He really concentrated on putting more touch on his passes and it showed. When he takes something off his throws though, the ball wobbles more but that can be fixed. Hakmi is really coming into his own. His accuracy is coming along as well. With his combination of speed and arm strength if he can fix his accuracy he really could begin separating himself from the field.
All that being said about Hakmi, Steven Ensminger is still the most consistent quarterback for the Bulldogs. He did have some bad throws last night and threw at least one interception.
Ross Jenkins and Colby Cameron had extremely rough nights last night throwing several interceptions. Jenkins' problems came on the 7 on 7 drills while Cameron's came on the 11 on 11.
Jenkins also is holding on to the ball too long and resulting in "sacks" for the defense. This is something that has plagued Jenkins his entire career as a Bulldog.
Ray Holley continues to impress. His speed and vision is nearly unmatched in the Bulldogs backfield. Lennon Creer had probably his best night as a Bulldog. Myke Compton is playing at a high level and with a considerable amount of energy. He is obviously trying to be seen so he can get more carries than he saw last year. Tyrone Duplessis was in a red jersey last night and held out of drills. Lyle Fitte had a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Solomon Randle.
Some of the receivers struggled to hold on to the ball with several drops and even strips by the defense, namely Adrian Cole. Ahmad Paige had his best night as a Bulldog last night. Taulib Ikharo is really pushing for a starting spot. He may not be the fast receiver out there but runs the best routes on the team and has some of the surest hands on the team.
The depth at this position is astounding.
The defense were the kings of last night's practice. The energy this group played with was unmatched by the offense. They were flying around the field. Javontay Crowe had a good night, Ryan Williams had a good night, and Justin Goodman as well. Two of those three names are newcomers to the Bulldogs. As coach Sonny Dykes has mentioned on numerous occasions, all competition does is make everyone aroudn play to a high level. This is especially true when those players are new faces.
IK Enemkpali showed off his skills as a pass rusher tonight. Getting back to the quarterback with relative ease. One concern with IK is his ability to be balanced. Or will he be a third down and obvious passing yardage to go type guy?
The centers behind Lon Roberts really struggled. Matthew Shepperd particularly had issues getting the ball into the quarterbacks hands. Vince Cano had fewer struggled but still struggled.
Dave Clark looks to be far off from being able to play. It is a good thing he is here for three years.
Christian Lacey has a boot on his leg and looks to be out for a few games.
