Hokies continue to be a factor for top TE

Offers are continuing to mount for one of the top tight ends in the region. The 6-foot-5, 227-pounder is approaching 20 scholarships and the Hokies are among those in pursuit.

"I recently got offers from Michigan, Illinois and South Florida in the past few weeks," Charlotte (N.C.) Ardrey Kell tight end Drew Owens said. "I'm not sure how many offers I have. It's at about 17 or so.

"It's just an honor. I just want to keep getting more and extend and expand my options."

Owens hasn't taken any trips recently, but mentioned he plans to this summer. However, no specific destinations are mentioned.

Currently the in-state schools appear to have a slight advantage.

"I know the most about them and I've known them the longest," he said. "Those really stick out right now."

The Hokies are one of the schools trying to get to know Owens better.

"They are here every once in awhile and I'm definitely looking at Virginia Tech," he stated. "They have a great program and do the right things. They use their tight ends and have a good degree of winning.

"I haven't been up there, but I wanted to go up in the past couple weeks for the Nike Camp. I may head up there this summer, but as I said nothing is set."

Tech has one thing going for them in the process, but how big of a factor it is, is hard to say.

"My girlfriend now is committed to Virginia Tech for volleyball," he said. "It's not really that big. It's a factor."

Owens has a bit of a plan in mind for his recruitment.

"I'm planning to decide somewhere throughout the season or before the playoffs," he said. "I may take all five official visits. It'll probably be two or three."
