Bucks offer Toledo defensive back
While the temperatures are below freezing outside in Columbus (Ohio) the Buckeyes have been heating things up in the terms of football offers for the class of 2011. In years past the team has waited when it comes down to offering in-state players but that is not the case so far and a little persistence paid off for Toledo (Ohio) Rogers defensive back DerJuan Gambrell on Monday.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder and his head coach Rick Rios made the trip down from Northeastern Ohio to the Ohio State campus on Monday afternoon through the snow and the pair left the Capital City with some big news.
"I got my offer (on Monday)," Gambrell said. "My coach and I went down there to check things out."
Gambrell is the third cornerback offer to go out this season to date and the soft spoken player was taken aback by how quickly an offer came from Dick Tressel and the rest of the recruiting staff.
"It was shocking but exciting at the same time," Gambrell said.
Things have been relatively quiet so far on the recruiting front with Gambrell to date with only the Toledo Rockets getting on board with an offer before the Buckeyes. The Michigan Wolverines have been sending letters to this point but it appears that the Buckeyes have moved ahead quickly for the Toledo prospect.
"It is nice to stay home and play for such a big school," Gambrell said. "And Ohio State's academics are really strong too."
Gambrell runs a 4.5 flat (in the 40-yard dash) and has the ability to play receiver as well as defensive back and a returner. The initial feelings of the new offer have not worn off but Gambrell knows that he would like to decide sooner rather than later in the process and at this moment the Buckeyes will be tough to beat for his commitment.
"I really don't know how it will play out but at this moment the way I am feeling has me wanting to be a Buckeye all the way," Gambrell said. "But I haven't seen other places and talked to a bunch of other coaches yet. So I don't know when I will figure all the things out yet."
But by all accounts it seems as if the Buckeyes are in great shape to land their second commitment from Toledo for the class of 2011.
