Robey discusses visit with Kiffin
In a week that featured two bowl press conferences, hiring an assistant coach after two days of interviews and a speech in Memphis, head coach Lane Kiffin had limited visits on the recruiting front last week. One of the stops Kiffin did make was in Frostproof, Fla., to see defensive back Nickell Robey.
The 5-foot-8-inch, 165-pound defensive back camped at Tennessee over the summer, but he has been committed to Georgia since July. But that hasn't stopped schools like Tennessee from continuing to recruit him, and Robey continues to listen.
"I am still committed to Georgia," Robey said. "I am looking at some other schools, like Tennessee, and might take a visit or two."
Part of the reason for Robey looking around is the fact that Georgia head coach Mark Richt still has not filled openings on his defensive staff.
"I am waiting to see who they hire," Robey said. "That's part of why I am still looking at some other schools. You gotta see what is happening at Georgia and then go from there."
This week for Robey recruiting has stopped. The dead period prevents in- home visits from coaches and phone calls are limited to just one a week per school. Robey is not getting away from football as he is preparing to play in the Florida North/South All-Star game.
"It's nice to be away from recruiting, but I am enjoying getting ready for this game," said the athletic, versatile Robey who was a camp star in Knoxville. "It's fun to practice what you love to do. So I am having a good time this week."
As for the Vols, Robey likes what he sees and hears from Tennessee.
"The visit with coach Kiffin went well," Robey said. "It was fun to hang out with him and talk. We talked about everything. He's a good guy and a good coach. I like Tennessee. I think they have a nice swagger about them. I was up there in the summer and then this fall for an official visit. They are building something special up there."
Rivals.com ranks Robey as the 10th-best cornerback in the nation and a four-star recruit.
