It's what is called "targetting" in the online advertising world. It can be "contextual" - based on the types of searches you do, or "behavioral" - based on the sites that you visit. So if you did a search on democratic party or obama's speech, they can tell that you've searched or been on that site, and will target you with ads for that subject. Hope that clears up any confusion on your part! If you're on Firefox, I believe you can block advertising.
