July 13, 2009Denton (Texas) Guyer quarterback J.W. Walsh (6-2, 185, 4.56) is regarded as one of the top 2011 quarterbacks in the Lone Star State.
The 6-2, 185-pound gunslinger is coming off a 2008 season in which he threw for 1,142 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for another 871 yards and seven touchdowns, as Guyer finished 12-3 on the season.
Over the weekend in College Station for the State 7-on-7 Championships, Walsh was one of the top, if not the top quarterback on hand for the event. Arizona and Kansas have verbally offered and interest has come from colleges across the country.
This summer he has hit the camp circuit and continues to leave impressions on college coaches. However, those colleges have also left quite an impression on him.
"I went to Texas, OU, and OSU, and all three of them were very well run," Walsh said. "They put on a good workout and all the coaches were real friendly. It was just a good atmosphere everywhere you went. It's hard not to like all three of them. They were real fun."
The camp experiences left impressions, but recruiting and college is not a top priority at this point.
"I'm just enjoying high school right now," Walsh, who is currently ranked No. 26 in the 2011 Lone Star Recruiting Top 100 said. "When the time comes I'll have a favorite, but now is not the time."
At this point in time the only thing on Walsh's mind is his junior season. Last season Guyer made a run to the 4A Div. I semi-finals, and while the team's success surprised some, the Wildcats are still bitter.
"Everything we do we're doing it to get to the state championship game," Walsh said. "Last year we were a game short and it hit us all real hard and now it's in our hearts that we really want state this year."
