Cougs Drawing Blanks
Stanford's iron horse running back Toby Gerhart only touched the ball 22 times but he scored touchdowns on four of those rushing attempts as the Cardinal football team eased past the Cougars 58-0 in Palo Alto. It was the second consecutive game in which the Cougars have been shut out and WSU has not scored in the last 10 quarters of play - a span covering nearly a month. The Cougars suffered their first consecutive shutouts since 1969 and have now set a Pac-10 record for most points allowed in a single conference season - allowing 350 points in conference games to date.
Junior quarterback Kevin Lopina started the game at quarterback but redshirt freshman J.T. Levenseller was able to play a few snaps in the game as well. Neither, however, were effective for the Cougars. Lopina, who has yet to throw a touchdown pass in his four starts this season, was unable to find the end zone again and tossed two interceptions. Levenseller did not fare much better, mishandling a hand-off to running back Logwone Mitz on his first play in the game, allowing Stanford to recover.
The highlights for Wazzu were the defense holding the Cardinal to a field goal in their initial possession and the offense nearly scoring twice - but ending with Nico Grasu's field goal being blocked and Lopina tossing a pick in the end zone.
The win was Stanford's largest-ever in Pac-10 conference play.
Wazzu plays Arizona at Martin Stadium in Pullman on Saturday, November 8.
