Basketball season went late this year - and certainly nobody is complaining about that - but it means the usual focus on spring football practice is somewhat delayed while everybody, football players and coaches alike, waited to see what would become of the Cougars' Big Dance run and their first appearance in the Sweet 16 against mighty North Carolina.
One of the first notable changes for new head coach Paul Wulff has been the debut of a so-called "Unity Council" - a group of players who will work with Wulff on issues affecting the team including discipline.
A second change will be in practice tempo. With Wulff's new no-huddle offense, there is usually reduced time for rest [and subsequently, preparation by a defense] and his practices will now reflect that tempo while also lasting longer than they have in the recent past.
A third change is Wulff's requirement that all offensive linemen wear knee braces during the spring practice session.
In personnel matters, the man running the new Wulff offense will be Gary Rogers, the incumbent to the job while offensive lineman Andy Roof has been moved to the defensive line and Andy Mattingly, who had played both defensive line and linebacker for the Cougars, will now be back on the defensive line. On special teams, Wade Penner is the incumbent kicker but Wulff has indicated that a JC kicker is being brought in and may compete for the job in autumn
