TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -DeJuan Tribble's 36-yard interception return for a touchdown capped a 21-point second quarter Saturday and No. 22 Boston College held off Florida State 24-19.
Larry Anam intercepted a desperation throw by Florida State's Drew Weatherford in the end zone on the game's final play to preserve the victory and send the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Seminoles into last place in the league's Atlantic Division.
Weatherford arced his pass for 6-foot-6 Greg Carr, who was smothered by five BC defenders on the play - which was reviewed by a replay official to ensure BC had possession.
The game was largely settled in the last minute of the first half.
Boston College (6-1, 3-1 ACC) scored two touchdowns in the final 51 seconds to take a 21-10 lead. Steve Aponavicius' 26-yard field goal boosted the lead to 24-10 after three.
The Eagles and Clemson are both 3-1 in division play, but Boston College has the tiebreaker if their conference records are the same at the end of the season.
BC quarterback Matt Ryan completed 16 of 26 passes for 262 yards and the Eagles limited Florida State to just 28 yards rushing.
Weatherford, whose 1-yard TD early in the fourth quarter pulled Florida State to within 24-17, was 32-of-48 for 326 yards with two interceptions. Chris Davis had 10 catches for 100 yards.
Florida State (4-3, 2-3) had its chances late, but couldn't capitalize.
The preseason favorite to win its division, Florida State found just about every way it could to lose. Things fell apart for the Seminoles in the second quarter just when it looked like they could have grabbed control of the game.
Leading 10-7 with a chance to get the ball back in good field position late in the first half, Florida State chose to go for a blocked punt, but ended up roughing BC's Johnny Ayers. Five plays later L.V. Whitworth scored on a 6-yard run to give the Eagles a 14-10 lead.
Tribble scored with 20 seconds left in the half to give the Eagles a 21-10 advantage. He broke in front of the intended receiver to pick off Weatherford for his third interception of the season.
Florida State had taken the lead when Greg Carr hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Weatherford on a crossing pattern.
Roger Williams' 38-yard interception return set up the game's first score, a 28-yard field goal by Gary Cismesia that gave Florida State a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. Williams picked off a tipped pass thrown by Ryan and returned it to the Eagles' 32.
Brian Toal's 1-yard run gave BC a 7-3 lead.
