March 11, 2006The 2006 NIKE Combine tour continued Saturday in East Los Angeles, California as just under 750 participants were tested in the four traditional combine elements on the campus of East L.A. College.
Despite threatening skies and ominous weather forecasts, the weather held nicely for the participants, and the SPARQ Ratings* were the highest of any combine so far this spring.
Many top prospects from Southern California and beyond were on hand for the event, but a quartet from the Greater Las Vegas area stole the show.
Taking top billing was 6-2, 203 pound running back Tim Johnson, who's already considered by some to be the top prospect in Nevada for the Class of 2007. Johnson did nothing to dispel that notion on Saturday, as the Las Vegas Del Sol High back ripped off a 4.50 40, benched 27 reps and posted a 37.4-inch vertical jump on his way to a combine-best 92.38 SPARQ Rating, which is also the top rating recorded so far on the 2006 NIKE Combine tour.
Right behind Johnson with a 91.72 SPARQ Rating was Norco (Calif.) linebacker Jordan Campbell, a 6-0, 215 pounder who's highlights included 36 reps on the bench, a solid 4.75 40 and a quick 4.16 shuttle.
Three other Las Vegas area prospects, Cheyenne DB D.J. Campbell, Sierra Vista DB Nathan Estimada and Desert Pines RB Michael Ball, rounded out the SPARQ top five.
SSFootball.com will have more on these top performers and others who emerged at the combine plus all of the top marks through the following week, so if you haven't yet subscribed to SSFootball.com, the time is now!
*Taking the standard measurements of the football combine, the SPARQ Rating weighs and combines the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, vertical jump and bench press into a single number that measures an athlete's overall athleticism. Thus, football players can track the progress of their training, through occasional tests, and compare SPARQ Ratings with teammates, training partners and competitors.
