January 13, 2003Throw in your best sports clich?- we're coming down the stretch, it's crunch time, etc. - but there is no question that now is the time when we can expect big news to flow fast and furious the next few weeks.
And that's what makes taking a look at the Rivals100.com team rankings worth a gander.
Georgia and USC remain No. 1 and No. 2 in the team rankings with Oklahoma, Texas and South Carolina rounding out the top five.
But it should be interesting to see what happens tomorrow when the rankings are updated to include Florida offensive lineman Carlton Medder de-committing from UGA and Oklahoma landing the nation's No. 89 player in defensive end Alonzo Dotson.
Those two factors could likely put USC at No. 1 again and push Oklahoma right up with UGA.
The real race is to see who is going to land in the top 25 and then shoot up the charts, though.
Two teams to really keep your eye are Ohio State and Miami. Miami is expected to make its run here over the next few weeks when many of the South Florida gems make their picks, but Ohio State is making a nice push buoyed by winning the national championship.
Florida defensive end Stanley McClover was a huge get for the Buckeyes on Sunday and it's likely that you'll soon be able to add Ira Guilford.
The Florida Gators are making a nice run, too, up the charts. If they can get Medder, continue to snag blue-chippers like Skyler Thornton and Chris Leak, then things are likely to be a lot happier in Gainesville.
A few teams are also on the top 25 bubble. Those teams are Wisconsin, SMU, Kansas and Notre Dame.
The Badgers are still waiting on Houston offensive lineman Robert Felton and Houston defensive end Kurt Ware to make their picks.
SMU is hoping that they will get more good news from the 18 players that visited this past weekend - including LSU pledge Darius Ingram and Arizona pledges Wilrey Fontentot and Syndric Steptoe.
Kansas is waiting out the Sunflower State's top uncommitted player in John Randle, who is expected to pick between KU, K-State and Missouri.
The fighting Irish hope to hear soon on guys like Rivals100 pick Greg Olsen, Kenny Scott and Tommy Zbikowski. Some insiders think Notre Dame could land all three impact recruits.
