The Charlotte 49ers improved to 3-0 on the season with a dominate 70-49 win over Lamar Saturday night in Halton Arena.
The 49ers began the game with yet another different starting rotation (Darion Clark, Willie Clayton, E. Victor Nickerson, Terrence Williams, and Pierria Henry). 49ers Head Coach Alan Major commented in his press conference on the 49ers depth as being a "good problem to have".
After going down by 4 early on the 49ers would rally at the 16 minute mark to go on an eight minute 23-4 run initiated by a Williams (10pts, 6 reb) jumper.
DeMario Mayfield checked in for the first time this season at the 11:05 minute mark in the first half and played fifteen minutes and scored 12 points and pulled 4 rebounds down to contribute to fast-paced 49ers offense.
The 49ers entered the first half with a dominate 39-22 advantage behind the scoring of freshman Denzel Ingram who was 3 of 4 beyond the three-point arc.
As a team the 49ers dominated the points in the paint (22-8), points off of turnovers (16-2,) and points from the bench (23-4.)
After a solid halftime field goal percentage of 53, the 49ers only shot 33.6 percent in the second half. But they held Lamar to 31 percent shooting in the first half.
The second half was no different as the 49ers closed out Lamar forcing yet another team to shoot 31 percent from the field and 0 percent from outside the arc. The 49ers shot 42 percent on the evening.
The 49ers took advantage of key mistakes my Lamar players earning 25 points off of 22 turnovers for the evening.
Lamar Head Coach Pat Knight commented on his team's 22 turnovers by saying, "Our offense was their best offense tonight". Charlotte boasted 14 steals to Lamar's 3.
Lamar was led by forwards, Rhon Mitchell (14 pts, 10 reb) and Amos Wilson (10 pts, 5 reb).
Ingram led the game with 16 points and 4 steals as he, Braswell (9 pts, 3 reb), and Mayfield (12 pts) accounted for 37 of the 49ers 43 points off the bench.
Overall it was another home victory for an audience of 4620 as the 49ers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1995.
Charlotte has completed their homestretch and will head to Anchorage, Alaska next weekend where they play Texas State in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout.
