July 23, 2012GREENSBORO--- UNC head coach Larry Fedora confirmed at the conclusion of his interview Monday afternoon at the ACC Media Kickoff that rising senior wide receiver Todd Harrelson has been dismissed from the Tar Heels.
"Todd is a guy that did some nice things for us in the spring, but he's no longer with us," said Fedora, citing a violation of team rules as the reason for Harrelson's dismissal.
In addition, a UNC school official confirmed that redshirt freshman linebacker Keeon Virgile and fourth-year junior defensive back D.J. Bunn have also been dismissed from the Tar Heel football squad for a violation of team rules.
The dismissal of Harrelson ends a stormy time for the Virginia native in Chapel Hill, as he was actually first dismissed from the Tar Heels by former head coach Everett Withers before being reinstated earlier this year. Harrelson also moved around quite a bit in his career from wide receiver to cornerback and then back to wide receiver.
Although his collegiate career ends without a bang, Harrelson will always hold distinction in UNC football lore for making arguably one of the best catches in the school's postseason history late in the Music City Bowl triumph over Tennessee in 2010.
Virgile never played in a game for UNC, having redshirted the 2011 season, while Bunn played sparingly for the Tar Heels over three seasons, mostly on special teams.
The dismissals does of course open up three scholarships, putting the Tar Heels closer to meeting the required 80 scholarship limit that UNC will have in the 2012 season as a result of the NCAA sanctions, which forced a reduction in five scholarship players over the next three seasons.
