December 12, 2011Nebraska may have suffered a crushing blow to their offensive line for their upcoming date in the Capital One Bowl against South Carolina.
Senior starting center Mike Caputo was picked up for a DUI in Lincoln over the weekend. According to KETV Channel 7, Caputo was one of 17 people Lincoln police arrested on suspected drunk driving charges in the span of four hours.
Caputo was arrested on Sunday morning at 1:07 a.m. at the U-Stop Gas Station 110 West O Street.
Lincoln Police spokeswoman Katie Flood said in an email that Caputo appeared to have fallen asleep seated behind the wheel with the lights on and engine running. Once awakened, he showed signs of alcohol impairment and was later taken to Cornhusker Place for testing. His blood alcohol content measured .103. Caputo was cited and released for DUI. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 17.
In a written statement, head coach Bo Pelini said he's waiting to hear more about the situation before commenting any further.
"I am aware of the situation involving Mike Caputo, and am awaiting more information before making any further comment," Pelini said.
A year ago both safety Rickey Thenarse and defensive tackle Baker Steinkuhler were picked up for DUI before NU's date in the Holiday Bowl. Pelini suspended both players for the bowl game for their actions.
If Caputo is suspended for the bowl game, either sophomore Cole Pensick or sophomore Spencer Long are possibilities to start at center in his place.
