August 26, 2010Before the final open practice of fall camp, the biggest story of the month broke. Starting tailback Derrick Washington has been suspended.
"He's indefinitely suspended for disciplinary reasons," Gary Pinkel said. "As I've done for ten years, I don't ever talk about those issues."
According to the Columbia Missourian, Washington was issued an order of protection way back in June stemming from accusations by a female of an early morning sexual assault. The Missourian story (read it here) includes this statement from the alleged victim in court documents:
"I was sexually assaulted by him. ... I am pressing criminal charges...I fear physical retaliation."
Missouri athletic director Mike Alden told the paper that he has known about Washington's situation, "probably, I think for a few weeks."
Washington has run for 2,127 yards and 28 touchdowns over his first three seasons. This year would be his third as Missouri's starting tailback. Washington had shed ten pounds in the offseason and had drawn rave reviews from teammates and coaches alike.
Kendial Lawrence was listed second on the depth chart Missouri relased on Tuesday. DeVion Moore is behind Lawrence, but has not practiced in nearly a week. True freshmen Henry Josey and Marcus Murphy are behind Moore.
The Tigers open the season against Illinois on Saturday, September 4th in St. Louis. At this point, it seems highly unlikely they will have Washington's services. His future with the team is unknown at this time.
