August 10, 2010EAST LANSING - SpartanMag.com staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk stepped outside the Skandalaris Football Center onto the George and Sally Perles Plaza to share their thoughts on the latest developments in the Michigan State football program following 2010 Football Media Day.
Comp and PK had a lot to talk about after making their rounds at media day, watching part of Tuesday's practice, and asking questions of Michigan State assistant coaches, coordinators, and head coach Mark Dantonio.
In terms of practice, the SpartanMag.com shared some of their initial thoughts on what appears to be a strong incoming freshman class. Players like William Gholston, Mylan Hicks, Max Bullough, Le'Veon Bell, and Nick Hill all looked ready to make a splash on the football field this fall. Another player that stood out from the crowd was junior college transfer Anthony White. The former Battle Creek Central star hustled from station to station on Tuesday and separated himself from the pack with unexpected agility in freshman-only drills.
White, who has three years to play three, looks like he will work his way into the playing rotation this fall along an interior defensive line that is already stocked with talent.
Comparoni and Konyndyk also discussed the competition at the Star linebacker position between Denicos Allen and Chris Norman. The two young Spartan linebackers are both better than the Brandon Denson whom they are replacing.
After hearing defensive coaches rave about the incoming defensive backs class of Hicks, Darqueze Dennard, Isaiah Lewis, and Kurtis Drummond, it was good to see the young Spartan defensive backs run around in practice. The freshmen quartet looks impressive physically.
They will push players already in the program including Jairus Jones for spots in the two-deep. Jones is in much better shape than in the spring when he was overweight and being threatened with a potential move to linebaker. Jones down to 203 pounds according to Dantonio.
Jones was singled out by Dantonio along with Dana Dixon and Patrick White red-shirt freshmen and sophomores capable of stepping into back-up roles and onto the field if necessary without significant drop-off.
