Williams plans to make early impact at A&M
LeKendrick Williams is not often a name that is brought up. One of the first Aggies commitments in the class, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound three-star prospect is one of the less-heralded members of the group. When Texas A&M fans are discussing the recruiting class of 2010, Houston (TX) Sharpstown athlete
However, Williams does not see himself in that same light. This past weekend, he joined 16 other prospects on an official visit to Aggieland. He had a chance to talk to A&M head coach Mike Sherman about his expected role at the next level.
"He was telling me that I can come in right away and make a difference in the return game," Williams said of Sherman. "That's a big thing that I can bring the team and help with. I'm going to have an impact next year returning kicks and punts.
"We also talked about my position. He really likes me as a return man for now, but I'm going to play a little offense and defense. I'm going to do whatever they want me to do."
Williams had a chance to bond with his future teammates throughout the weekend.
"My host was Sean Porter," he said. "I got to know a lot of the freshmen class. They are all really cool. We just hung out and relaxed and everything.
"There were really three of us (recruits) that were hanging out. I mainly spent my time with Damontre (Moore) and Toney (Hurd Jr.). Damontre and I were talking to Toney about A&M, but nobody was pressing him or anything. We all just had a lot of fun."
Though Williams says he did not make a concerted effort try to recruit Hurd, a current Notre Dame pledge, he and some of the other 21 Aggie commits are working to keep one of their own in the fold.
"I'm calling Corey Nelson tonight," Williams said on Monday evening. "I haven't had a chance to talk with him before and he wasn't there this weekend since he had already taken his official. I just want to get to know him.
"I know that he's looking around a bit. We were talking about that this weekend. We have a really good class coming in and we want to make sure he's a part of it. Some of the other guys are going to talk to him as well. We want him to know that we have something special going on here."
