Playmaker Antonio Brown talks season
During Central Michigan's recent Media Day, ChippewaCountry was able to interview a large number of current players and get their thoughts on the upcoming season as well as ask them some appealing questions. First up on the interview series is All-American Antonio Brown. Brown came to CMU via the walk-on route, but it didn't take long for the former North Carolina Tech standout to earn scholarship status.
"It was about a week total of practice before I got a scholarship" said Brown.
Brown's route to CMU is an intriguing journey, and it turns out it was his familiarity with Butch Jones that led him to the Chippewas.
"I was at prep school and Coach Jones was at West Virginia, he gave me a call and said he had a spot for me," said Brown. "I was at training camp in 2007 and I just trusted Coach Jones and Coach Volero, so I followed them to CMU".
Brown was originally a quarterback at North Carolina Tech, and that experience as a signal called helped with his transition to wide receiver and return specialist.
"It really helped me out," said Brown in reference to playing quarterback before CMU. "It helped me understand the coverage's, how to get open and understand the defensive concepts".
With the season approaching quickly, Brown has kept a level head with his goals.
"Just continue to be focused, be humbled and be passionate. Go above and beyond and push forward with perseverance".
ChippewaCountry also had a chance to talk to Brown about his interesting 2008 media guide picture, which displayed a level of comedic focus and a thick beard. For 2009, the coaches made it a priority to have their All-American looking good.
"Yeah, I'm all clean shaved," laughed Brown. "I got a little more relaxed look and I'm ready to roll".
As he steps into a leadership roll, Brown has had a chance to act as a mentor for offensive players and teach them some of the skills that have earned him numerous collegiate accolades. Brown offered his thoughts on what younger players have impressed him so far.
"Tim Phillips, Zurlon Tipton and a couple of other players that I can't think of right now. But those guys are really going to help us".
ChippewaCountry then threw Antonio Brown into a little Q&A rapid fire segment:
CC: What is your favorite music?
CC: Favorite food?
AB: I'm a pizza kind of guy.
CC: Any pre-game rituals?
AB: Yeah, I like to do a band around my hips, a little light jump rope, a good stretch, then I'm ready to go.
CC: What's the fastest you've ever run the forty in?
CC: Any nicknames?
AB: Paris Cotton calls me "Tootsie".
CC: Player in the NFL you resemble?
AB: Roscoe Parrish, he was also a walk-on from Miami. We're kind of similar and he's a great returner.
