Ferguson makes impact as a freshman
As a high school recruit, Sean Ferguson got plenty of interest.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive end had scholarship offers from Rutgers, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and Central Michigan. But when it came time for visits, he kept hearing the same things.
That is until he visited Starkville.
"I went on a lot of visits and it seemed to me like all of the coaches were saying the same thing," Ferguson said. "I wanted somebody that was going to tell me the truth and something different. Coach (Sylvester) Croom told me straight up what was going to happen if I came here. "
And what happened was Ferguson found himself starting at defensive end as a true freshman in his first career game, the first time that has happened since Quinton Culberson in 2003.
"When I first came out here I just wanted to help the team," Ferguson said. "I didn't want to just be another player on the roster. I wanted to help the team and help Coach Croom win. Coach Croom saw that potential in me and put me on the field."
Since that initial start, Ferguson has played in all nine games and earned a total of five starting calls. The Miami, Fla., native has made 10 tackles on the year with one for loss.
