2011 CB talks UA, AU
In his sophomore season at Walker, Jacquese Kirk made himself a statewide star by hauling in seven interceptions. Now in his junior season, the 5-foot-11, 165-pound cornerback is continuing his progress and becoming a leader for his young team.
"We started out 0-2 but since then we've won four games in a row. We're really starting to turn things around now," Kirk said. "I've got an interception and 31 tackles this season so far."
Kirk has received early attention from more than half a dozen programs and most are impressed with the young star's grasp of the cornerback position.
"I'm hearing from Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Georgia, Northwestern, UAB and Auburn. I don't have any offers yet but I hope to start getting some soon."
"I'm definitely going to be a cornerback in college. That's what everyone is talking to me about. I feel like I'm a pretty good athlete but what most coaches seem to like about me is my technique. I think that's what separates me from most other guys at my position."
While Kirk will likely be pursued by programs from around the country, it may come down to an in-state battle.
"I really like Alabama and Auburn. I love the players Alabama has on both sides of the ball right now. They've got as much talent as any team in the country. Auburn is still rebuilding but I like their coaches and I like where they are headed. I grew up an Auburn fan but I'm not going to let that play into my decision. I will always love Auburn but I need to go to the school that is going to give me the best chance to play, become a better player and hopefully get to the next level."
"I've been to two Alabama games this year (Florida International and Arkansas) and I'm going to Auburn's game against Furman in November. I just kind of want to get a chance to see the atmosphere and watch the teams in action and see how they handle themselves on the sidelines."
In the meantime, Kirk will spend the next year working to improve as a player and attempting to raise his profile among college coaches.
"I plan on going to several camps next summer. I went to a couple last year but I think it's time to really step things up and show everyone out there what I'm capable of."
