Gilbert picking up offers
Huntsville, Texas athlete Justin Gilbert is quietly becoming one of the most sought after athletes hailing from the Lone Star state. Although Gilbert's name hasn't created a heavy buzz across the internet, he certainly has caught the attention of several prominent programs thus far in the young 2010 recruiting season.
The 6-foot-1, 173-pounder has been the starter under center for the Hornets since his sophomore campaign. Last season Gilbert earned district 18-4A offensive MVP awards. It's easy to see why opposing coaches from the district are ready for Gilbert to graduate and colleges are ready to get him on campus.
So far Gilbert holds offers from TCU, SMU, Houston, Baylor and Utah. Others such as Oklahoma, Oregon, and Texas Tech are showing strong interest.
"I have five offers right now," he said. "I'd say Oklahoma is showing a lot of interest, they called my coach today and asked him some questions and asked him to send some highlight film up to them. Most schools are recruiting me as an athlete. I'll most likely play receiver or DB. It doesn't matter where I play.
"I'm pretty open to everyone, I don't have any favorites yet."
Gilbert says proximity will be a factor in his decision making.
"It doesn't really matter," he said. "Well, I don't want to go too far but I also don't want to be too close."
Like other athletes with busy schedules, Gilbert hasn't had the opportunity to attend any junior days but has plans to possibly check out a few schools in the coming weeks.
"I haven't attended any junior days," he said. "I am going up to Baylor with one of my defensive coaches on Monday to one of their practices. I'd also like to go to one of OU's practices. One of my coaches said they would take me if I just ask them. I'll most likely ask them to take me up there one day."
One of the first schools to offer Gilbert a scholarship was TCU. Although the Frogs know plenty about him, he's still learning more about them.
"They were the second school to offer," he said. "I really don't know too much about them. They're recruiting me as a receiver or defensive back."
Gilbert says he will take his throughout the process and look at what each school has to offer.
"I'll probably wait it out until after my senior year. I'll try to see as many schools as I can over the summer."
