Bulaga confident the OL will improve
After seeing pretty significant playing time as a true freshman, Bryan Bulaga is looking for some improvement in 2008, not only from himself but the offensive line as a whole. Bulaga, who heads into camp as the starting left tackle, talks about what he learned from playing last year, moving from guard out to tackle, how the line has improved, and much more.
Q: Going back to last year, what was it like playing as a true freshman?
BULAGA: It was definitely a great experience. Going into the year, I didn't expect to play, but I did a good job in camp and just getting to play in the Big Ten and against some of the best players in the country was a great experience.
Q: There seems to be a lot of competition in camp. What do you think you have to do to put yourself in position to start by the season opener?
BULAGA: Well, I mean I've got to come out and be consistent everyday, and I think that's the same for every guy. That's one thing that I think we lacked last year as a unit is consistency. So I think the guys that are the most consistent are going to be the ones that win the spots.
Q: Seth indicated in Chicago that the number 46 kind of has some significance to the group.
BULAGA: Oh, definitely. I mean giving up that many sacks in a season is a big number and it's definitely not something that you want in the stat column. That's in the back of everyone's mind and that did happen last year, but we need to improve that dramatically this year.
Q: How much do you feel like you guys up front are the driving force this year?
BULAGA: Well, I think it's both offensive and defensive lines. That's where it all starts is right up front and that's going to be the key to both sides of the ball. If we both succeed then I think it's really going to help the team.
Q: What makes you confident the offensive line will succeed?
BULAGA: I mean I'm not going to blame last year on inexperience, but I think we've got more experience now. Lots of guys got playing time in the two deeps and even a few guys out of the two deeps, so I think having that experience will help. We're all pretty good friends and we all gel together. The question is do we gel as an offensive line and I think we do. I think we're going to be all right.
