Coaches flock to see small-school defender
Just south of Houston in Galveston County, there is a rarity among the larger high schools of the area. In the shadows in perennial powers La Marque and Texas City sits tiny Hitchcock High School. The Bulldogs play in class 2A and have to travel hours each Friday night for away games to the other schools in their district.
That is why it is so impressive to see college recruiters making the rounds through the coach's office this spring. The fact that they are not even allowed to participate in spring football makes it even more impressive. The player that all the schools are coming to watch is Michael Sam.
"In 2A we don't do spring ball," said the 6-foot-3, 222 pound defender. "We're not allowed to. We're doing seven-on-seven, though.
"I'm playing middle linebacker in seven-on-seven. Sometimes I'll go with the defensive line too. We do drills and lift weights and everything."
