Pinegar climbs the ranks
Giving up a sure thing for potentially greater rewards down the road has been kind of a theme for Maryland offensive lineman Paul Pinegar and his family.
His grandfather, Wayne Caldwell, passed on a chance to sign an NFL contract with the Detroit Lions by enlisting in the Coast Guard. The former Ohio State center decided to join the military during World War II.
Caldwell advanced to Vice Admiral of the Coast Guard and became a hero for his ability to maneuver in supplies for American troops in Germany.
After suffering a broken foot on the first play of the first game of his junior season at Sherwood High School, and missing four games, most hopes of a Division I scholarship went down the drain for Paul Pinegar. He could have gone to a lower level school on a scholarship, but had his sights set on a loftier goal.
