Tuesday Notebook: Matthews Moves To OLB
Defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and the rest of South Carolina's defensive coaches felt they needed to tweak things a little heading into Saturday's 3:30 p.m. showdown with No. 2 LSU at Tiger Stadium.
They came up with a whopper.
Freshman Cliff Matthews, previously the backup to Eric Norwood at defensive end, has been shifted to weakside linebacker to take better advantage of his superior combination of speed and size. Matthews is listed as the starter at WLB ahead of sophomore Gerrod Sinclair.
Casper Brinkley, who had 44 tackles last season as a defensive end before being switched to outside linebacker before the start of spring practice, has returned to his former position and is listed as the starter ahead of freshman Travian Robertson.
