Maddox watching and learning from veterans
Steve Spurrier contends Brian Maddox was born two years too late.
Had the talented freshman running back from Anderson, S.C. joined the Gamecocks in 2005, Spurrier's first season as head coach of the Gamecocks, he would have likely been the starting running back instead of Mike Davis, a local product of Columbia High School.
But he wasn't. He was born in 1989, instead, two years after Davis.
The 5-foot-10 Maddox was just 16 years old and a junior in high school when USC took the field at Williams-Brice Stadium on Sept. 1, 2005 to face Central Florida in the much-anticipated first game of Spurrier's tenure.
Two years later, Maddox is a promising running back with a bright future as a Gamecock. But fifth-year senior Cory Boyd and the junior Davis are also on the roster.
